Novell Announce LANalyzer for Windows v2.0
NetWare Expert Automates Troubleshooting, Gives Users In-Depth Training in
Network Analysis Techniques; Version 2.0 Adds Token Ring and TCP/IP Support
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- January 11, 1993 -- To help network managers and service
professionals better manage and maintain their NetWare networks, Novell Inc.
today announced LANalyzer for Windows v2.0, a next-generation network analysis
product that includes both automatic problem diagnostic capabilities and
extensive interactive network troubleshooting training. Version 2.0 also
supports 4- and 16-Mbps token ring topologies, decodes TCP/IP traffic, and
monitors IPX and AppleTalk routers.
LANalyzer for Windows, previously called LANalyzer for NetWare, is an
affordable, easy-to-use monitoring and troubleshooting system designed to
manage the interaction among networked devices. The only network analyzer
running under Windows, this release expands the product's capabilities by
including the NetWare Expert, an intelligent troubleshooting system that
automates analysis functions while training users in the fundamentals of
network diagnostics.
"Even small networks are inherently complex because of the virtually limitless
number of possible interactions among the nodes," said Navindra Jain, vice
president and general manager of Novell's Network Management and
Internetworking Products Division. "The goal of this product is simple: give
all NetWare troubleshooters, regardless of their expertise, a tool that's easy
to understand and use at a competitive price."
HEL, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based integrator and service provider, served as a
beta site for LANalyzer for Windows v2.0. "This generation of LANalyzer for
Windows is amazing," said Howard Lubert, president of HEL, Inc. and vice
chairman of the international board of LANDA (Local Area Network Dealers'
Association). "Not only does it now support token ring LANs, the built-in
expert system makes it possible for anyone who can install the software on
their LAN to quickly become a NetWare guru."
Key Features and Benefits
Novell's LANalyzer for Windows is designed to make complex network analysis
and management functions as easy to understand and use as possible. Users
navigate the product using the familiar Windows mouse-driven system. The
product's initial interface is an automotive "dashboard," which displays
network statistics on three circular gauges with needles that move to indicate
levels of key network activity, including traffic rates, bandwidth utilization
and errors. LANalyzer for Windows detects common
problems and alerts users to network anomalies through a system of warning
lights, audible alarms and text descriptions of error conditions. LANalyzer
for Windows v2.0 offers the following features and functions:
~ NetWare Expert -- Unique to LANalyzer for Windows, NetWare Expert helps
users understand the complex information the product generates. It
automatically discovers and diagnoses more than 20 common network
problems and offers users suggestions on how to fix those problems.
NetWare Expert also includes an eight-hour animated computer-based
training course on network analysis. Used as an adaptive learning tool,
NetWare Expert quizzes users on their knowledge of token ring and
Ethernet, identifies their strengths and trains them on their weaknesses.
NetWare Expert is also a reference tool. As a reference tool, users can
select a topic, such as "CRC errors," and NetWare Expert explains the
event, lists its symptoms and causes, and suggests solutions.
~ Automatic problem diagnosis -- NetWare Expert lets users obtain
information about any specific network alarm by double-clicking on the
appropriate entry in the event log. NetWare Expert lists symptoms
associated with a particular alarm, and offers suggestions on how to
correct the problem.
~ Token ring and Ethernet support -- LANalyzer for Windows now supports the
two most widely used networking topologies, token ring and Ethernet.
LANalyzer for Windows includes routines to find and fix the most common
token ring problems, including failing interface cards, overloaded
stations and failing multi-station access units (MSAUs).
~ TCP/IP support -- LANalyzer for Windows includes decodes for the TCP/IP
protocol suite. This extends the product's decoding capabilities beyond
the NetWare Lite, NetWare 2.x, NetWare 3.x, and AppleTalk Phase 1 and 2
decodes that shipped with the 1.0 version.
~ IPX and AppleTalk router monitoring -- Release 2.0 adds a warning light
that notifies users of an IPX or AppleTalk Phase 1 or 2 router failure.
~ Server monitoring -- LANalyzer for Windows continuously monitors NetWare
and AppleTalk file and print servers.
~ Additional sources of networking information -- LANalyzer for Windows
includes a VHS and PAL format video tape that describes six of the most
common networking problems and tells users how to identify and fix them.
The product also includes a book on network analysis that incorporates
Novell's collective experience on networking and troubleshooting.
~ Application launcher -- LANalyzer for Windows can execute a user-defined
application when an alarm is generated. For example, in the event of a
critical network error condition, such as an overloaded server, LANalyzer
for Windows can trigger an application that notifies the technician
responsible for maintaining that server.
~ Decode software development kit -- The LANalyzer for Windows SDK lets
developers write their own decodes for protocols not supported in this
product.
